The government has announced plans to upgrade the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as it aims to position it as the region’s travel hub.
In an announcement made by the Transport CS Davies Kipchirchir, the state will upgrade the runways and digitise passenger processing systems in the airport.
“The planned enhancement and expansion of JKIA is a strategic national initiative aimed at meeting Kenya’s future aviation needs, enhancing service quality, and safeguarding the airport’s role as a leading regional gateway,” CS Chirchir said.
The project will also include the construction of a 10 million-passenger-capacity terminal, upgrading the taxiway system and developing new taxiways, aprons and aircraft support facilities.
To improve the airport’s access to roads, the airport will also increase the parking capacity and enhance roadside access.
If successfully implemented, the airport will have a passenger increase from8.93 million passengers in 2025 to approximately 22.31 million by 2045; an overall growth rate of 4.6%.
Air cargo at JKIA is expected to grow from 407,214 tons in 2025 to 860,400 tons in 2045, more than doubling the volume over the forecast period.
