A new rights report says thousands of survivors of the 2007–2008 post-election violence (PEV) are still waiting for full reparations nearly two decades later. The Kenya Human Rights Commission notes that although government programmes offered some cash payouts and resettlement, many internally displaced persons (IDPs) remain landless, unregistered, or settled in areas without basic services.
The report highlights that land injustices were a major driver of the violence, and unresolved land claims continue to trap families in poverty. Despite recommendations from the TJRC and Waki Report, comprehensive compensation and land restitution have stalled.
KHRC is urging the government to prioritise proper compensation, secure land titles, and long-term support, warning that without meaningful reparations, Kenya risks repeating cycles of displacement and political violence.
