East African nation Uganda has gone offline ahead of the General Elections slated for Thursday 15th January 2026.
The nation’s telecommunications regulator Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) ordered mobile network operators and internet service providers to suspend services from 13th January at 6pm.
The decision the regulator framed as an intention to prevent misinformation and maintain security in the landlocked country.
The shutdown is expected to impact elections monitoring in a poll which strongman Yoweri Museveni is seeking 5th term in office. Now on his 40th year in office, the Museveni administration has restricted access to internet in two previous elections in 2016 and 2021.
