KenGen allays fears of power rationing

Power generating firm KenGen says it is operating at a peak, allaying fears of rationing as reported in a section of media outlets.

In a statement, the firm says its hydropower generation at the seven forks dams are operating optimally.

In the reports, electricity demands in the country had peaked at a new high of 2,418MW in November. KenGen however says it has healthy water reservoirs that is able to cope with the growing demands.

Kenya generates its power needs from a mix of hydropower and geothermal. The growing demand for power has been attributed increased industrial activity in the country. In 2025, the new record demand has peaked thrice.

Utility firm Kenya Power also has power purchase deals with Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda to buttress local demand.
